‘LA,1620: Catalogue’ is a print publication detailing the visual archive which twins our mixtape of the same name. It contains short notes on the network of interlinking ideas and audio visual methods behind the project. The catalogue’s structure works as a hybrid of an atlas and an encyclopaedia, borrowing from the organisational logic of each. Rather than straightening out this database of material into a linear sequence, the A-Z system flits between various different regions of a chaotic map of ideas, offering a limited window inside.
Through its own medium, the book embodies the processes of the mixtape. Mirroring the way a stack of audio files are consolidated into one frozen track, the book’s spreads are made up of different visual surface layers, all flattened into one. Occasionally detritus from the design process which would normally be edited out is left in the final spreads - echoing out its previous iterations or takes.
